How to Exercise Smart, Older Dogs

1/29/2018

Your dog needs exercise, probably more than you think. I'm reminded almost every time I sit at my computer that it's really not my time to do so. Gracie interrupts me with a poke in my ribs - the squeaky plush toy in her mouth letting out a holler as she does so. When you have a smart dog, you have to spend enough play time to satisfy the urge for excitement - also called JOY OF LIFE. I honor that in Gracie. She reminds me of my sedentary faults.

Now at age 10 1/2 years, as Gracie slows down (just a bit), I want to make sure I'm not over-taxing her joints with extra long walks and vigorous romps. I can still accomplish my goal of tiring her out, hearing that satisfied sigh after our new, shorter exercise routines. The key is in exercising her mind.

The mind also burns calories and can physically exercise a smarter, older dog while safely keeping their joints protected. Here are some favorite activities we like, especially on rainy days.

The Toy Wrap
Take a small, older blanket that's soft, and not too bulky. We have an old pink plush blanket that was a gift many years ago, marketed as a pet blanket. Wrap a favorite squeaky toy in it on the diagonal, then tie the opposite corners of the blanket together. Your dog will love setting the toy free. Be prepared to accept holes and shreds in this new well-loved blanket toy. Repeat.

The Guessing-Hand Game
Inspire the guessing game with your dog by hiding treats in your hands (be sure to scent both hands with the treats). Hide hands behind your back, then bring them forward at the same time. Reward your dog if they guess correctly, of course. But the key here is to try to keep them guessing. Smart dogs will play along for a long time and stay engaged.

The Hide-and-Seek Game
If you have kids, you have perfect partners for your dog to be the seeker. Dogs love traditional hide-and-seek. Add hints of soft knocking, whistles, squeaks, or even scents as you accompany your dog on the search.

All of these games and more can be great alternatives for the older dog to play safely, not over-stressing joints, and satisfying the fun quota for exercise. Top off playtime with a short walk, and you'll have a happy, tired pet soon taking a nap.

If you have more ideas, or concerns about your older pet, I'd love to hear from you.

End-of-Life (or maybe not)
This is the Lodge family's shortened MAX EFFECT story - If I could be on the rooftops I would be shouting out at the top of my lungs for everybody to hear.
We have two English Springer Spaniels - we had taken the older one to the vets in February at which time she had six massive mammory tumours removed. We rushed our girl in on October 7 again as she had been not moving, eating normally, as well as bleeding for approximately 2-3 full days.
The conversation came up about the end of life for our girl. It was heart breaking.
After leaving the vets I made a phone call to a friend who put me in touch with another friend who gave me a bottle of a product that was made for dogs. To say that the results are short of a miracle is an understatement.
Days leading up to October 7, 2017 - no movement, laboured breathing, no eating, bleeding, sleeping all the time.
- October 7, 2017 - rushed in to vets - conversation of end of life happens - vet indicates possibly last a week when we asked about 30 days - we decide to give it a try to care for our girl. She has little if any sight, partially deaf, senile, arthritis in back end, and a new exposed tumour on the back upper hind side.
- Rushing through my mind - Prevail K-9 - how do I get it - when will it be available - contact a friend who in turn contacts a friend who provides his bottle to us. Start the recommended doses both internal and directly on the exposed tumour.
- Administered K-9 at 2:24 pm at 3:35 pm my girl had flipped to her other side - first time in two plus days
- Carried her out to go to the bathroom - put her down on the grass - she starts to stumble and starts walking
- October 8 - tumour has completely changed - shrunk in size and red irritated skin has decreased
- Mocca up and out on her own accord
- 7:47 pm finally she is eating
- Seems to see the bright lights as she orientates her head in the direction of the light
- Tumour continues to shrink and improve
- October 10 - eating, moving, drinking, appears to be looking more in direction of bright lights
- Little discharge from tumour
- Eyes plus tumour looking better with little redness around it
- Climbed three stairs
- Trying to clean her pup
- October 11 - tumour considerably smaller
- Up moving around, drinking, eating, going outside etc.
- October 12 - finally she is "talking"
- October 13 - reduced amount of spray to make it last till release - mocca not the same
- Decided to use K-9 on tumour at recommended dose and Prevail Max on tumour at recommended dose for K-9
- She improves and is up moving about on her own and going outside on her own - success
- October 14 - Mocca out to kitchen sink and howling for her food!
- WOW!! She climbed up 18 stairs on her own
- Tumour is flat with skin now
- Eyes have no discharge
- Mocca looking and following me around the house (I am being super quiet)
- Evening she starts barking - yes - fantastic!
- October 15 - Mocca trying to play with her pup
My dogs will always be on prevail K-9 for the full length of their lives. Prevail K-9 has brought my Mocca back from knocking on deaths door to living a happy life for her age. Prevail K-9 is nothing less than a miracle
I am so very thankful for Prevail K-9 and my two friends - without them this story would not be!
Forever grateful, K.L.

Congestive Heart Failure
September 25
My pup has been so sick living on meds to survive~ diagnosed with congestive heart failure... enlarged heart~ fainting~ not enough oxygen~ fluid throughout his body... I got my li'l pup back! I think I'll start my other boy on it as well.
I took him to the vet yesterday he's lost 4 pounds of fluid.
UPDATE NOV 15, 2017
I've been using my single bottle of Prevail K-9 very sparingly the last 2 weeks anxiously awaiting some more to arrive in my monthly order. During the last two weeks I have seen my dog rapidily decline due to not having the K-9 to give it to him 3 times daily, to the point where I was calling everyone I knew in hopes of borrowing another bottle. No one had an extra so I took my pup to the vet and of course they gave him pills pills pills.... Well yesterday we received our Prevail K-9 in the mail. 6 pumps later (by today), he's back to being Sonny. Granted, he is 12 years old he does have congestive heart failure and a heart murmur, but these minerals in the K-9 seem to have STOPPED his labored breathing once again and his heart racing has slowed down. He is back to hopping on my bed instead of crawling under it because he had no strength and he's barking every two hours for another treat. I tell you what~ Monday night I thought my pup was not going to make it~ his body was starting to shut down and he collapsed twice that day. He was drenched in his own body fluids and loosing control and peeing everywhere. Today he's back to himself and I am glad that I ordered extra bottles so I never run out of these precious minerals again. I know my dog is 12 but I am NOT ready to say goodbye yet if there is something so simple out there that is keeping him alive. He is not in pain, but when he collapses it's because his heart is enlarged and he is NOT getting enough oxygen because of it. Worries me sick... When he uses the spray he does NOT collapse and his heart is not racing... The Prevail K-9 DEFINITELY has saved my dogs life DEFINITELY has increased the quality of his life.
A.L.

Youthful Again
Oct 25 2017
Meet Oakley. He is a 12 year old Welsh Corgi that LOVES Prevail K-9. He is acting like a puppy again, he is eating more than he has for years, and he appears to be happier than he has been for a long time. And the PRODUCT is FINALLY available. H.Z.

Urinary Tract Infections and Allergies
November 2, 2017
Evie is our 2 year old Female Boxer. We rescued her about 8 months ago. She came to us with a history of UTIs and head tremors. We knew that she was the right fit for our family and the missing piece to our home.

For the first 5 months we had no issues with UTIs but were experiencing monthly head tremors. Over the summer Miss Evie got a hold of too many hot dogs etc and we learned that she does in fact have a wheat allergy which we were suspecting.

This ended up causing massive yeast over growth and yeast infections breaking out everywhere. Both ears, all 4 paws and a UTI all at the same time... UGH!!! A massive vet bill later, 2 series of antibiotic ear drops, heavy oral antibiotics for the UTI with probiotic supplements to counter the lost gut flora, and a special paw wash that we had to do daily for 4 weeks.

After all of this we were still left with hot spots on 2 of her 4 paws and I was sooooo done with the daily task of taking her in the shower with me to wash her paws for 20 minutes.

This is when Prevail K-9 came to the rescue!!!!
I started spraying 4 sprays twice a day directly into her mouth and topically on the remaining hot spots. In less than a week they were all cleared up.

Other Bonuses we have noticed this past month is less stinky boxer farts  More solid (which is a really big deal for a boxer) and she has had no head tremors this month. Her anxiety has lessened, and she can now go play at a local doggy daycare. If Evie could talk she would say THANK YOU Dr. Mueller and Dave Jordan!!! She comes running over when she hears me spray my Prevail Max to get her Prevail K-9 so I know it's making her feel better.

Eye Health Improved
Nov.3,2017
We've been giving Prevail K9 to our 12 year old Havanese dog, Calla, for the last month and the blueness of age that was across her eyes...has all disappeared! She displays more energy and even jumped off the bed which she hasn't done in a long time!  Can't wait to find out what else this product will do for her :) J.W.

Wound Healing
November 2, 2017
My eldest German Shepherd has suffered from an auto immune disease for a few years, the condition is quite common to certain breeds. There were no immediate signs but after a while he started licking at rear so I checked under his tail and found an open wound, so I took him to the vet and they didn’t know what it was or what to prescribe so they suggested surgery to remove his anal glad as they thought that could be the cause… so trusting their experience we did – it didn’t help.
After that the wound kept getting bigger and nothing seemed to control it, under advisory from the vet I changed his food, in addition to having injections, medication and pills that just seemed to make his condition worse.
There was a particular pill that he took that when he laid down actually made him bleed heavily from the wound. I called the breeder and explained what was happening, they told me to do the best thing for him and put him to sleep – well that wasn’t an option for me.
So, I took him off all the medication and put him back on his raw food diet and had the vet put in 2 stitches to close the wound slightly, hesitantly the vet did it and i used K-9 orally and topically.
When I took him back for his follow up the vet couldn’t believe what he was seeing and asked what I had done. We have spent thousands trying to fix an issue that apparently vets can’t put their finger on and the K-9 was able to help my fur baby and now his wound has healed significantly. We haven’t had an episode since starting on the K-9.
On an additional note the K-9 has also helped with his arthritis from having his ACL surgery 6 years ago, he found stairs a problem and now he jumps up them like a pup and he’s 10.

Eye Health
So after just 3 days on Prevail k-9 Chinooks eye is no longer blood shot or boogery. First night I have not had to come home and flush her eye out. Thank you Sammy Jo Franks for introducing me to this miracle for dogs . I am so in love with it! And so is Chinook. K.F.

Recovery From Surgery
Nov. 17, 2017
This is my testimonial on how Prevail K-9 is helping Cayce heal from surgery.
2 weeks ago my GS Cayce was spayed and had an umbilical hernia repaired at the same time.
2 days before her surgery I gave her 4 sprays of Prevail K-9 under her lip twice a day and have continued to do so. I wanted to spray the Prevail K-9 right to the incision but I was instructed to not let her get that area wet for 5 days. I also was not allowed to let her lick her sutures (dissolving and glued) so she has been wearing the dreaded cone. I noticed that she was back leg scratching at her hernia area so I put socks on her back feet so that her nails would not snag it. Occasionally I take off her cone and socks to give her a break but did not notice her licking and scratching on Tuesday evening. She had torn open a few stitches. I snipped off the exposed thread and sprayed the K-9 right to the surgery area, as I know that this product when taken internally or externally oxygenates the blood so that it can help to heal. The spray is 100% natural and completely mineral based. When it dried I used surgical tape to close it. The next morning I took a photo and was ecstatic to see that it was 100% better and even appeared to be healthier looking. That same afternoon I took off the tape to reapply the Prevail K-9 and in less than 16 hours and it looks like it never happened.

Your Dog's Knee Can Heal

4/3/2017

Gracie is doing great!!! In fact, for a long time now, we've noticed no limp, no favoring, no signs of anything wrong with her knee. Yet for walks and very active play, we like her to wear her brace. Lately, however, she hasn't wanted to wear it. I took her out for a long walk today which included a little ball playing on wet grass, and she did absolutely fine. Oh, I also noticed in  the car the other day that she used her healed leg to pull herself up from the floor of the back seat to her bed (yes, her fancy donut bed takes up the whole back of the car.) It's quite a difference in height, so I was impressed with her strength.

When Gracie does wear her brace, I often have conversations with folks who either had a dog or knows someone who has a dog who underwent surgery. They didn't know there were any options. Well, there are always options!

Natural Alternatives to Knee Surgery

1/20/2016

Picture
If you have a healthy, active dog, you may find that injuries are inevitable. One of the most frequently occurring injuries in dogs is a torn cruciate ligament - somewhat similar to the human version - a torn knee ligament called the ACL. In dogs, it's called the CrCL.
For dogs, this kind of injury used to be devastating in that there were few or no options such as surgery or natural healing. Today, however, there is hope for a total recovery. That's our goal with Gracie.
Gracie had a partial tear in her CrCL last summer. We were determined to help her heal naturally using the tools we had at home such as supporting her with supplements, energy work (Reiki),and essential oils,. Cold laser treatments from her vet also helped, and we scheduled Gracie for acupuncture appointments, too. Her knee was healing nicely until the snow came. Gracie slipped on an ad board under the snow and re-injured her knee, resulting in a new tear to the ligament.
We almost were convinced that surgery would be her only option, but further research led me to a knee brace for dogs, from a company in Florida.
We ordered the brace and have been very pleased with Gracie's progress over the last few days. It's obvious that her muscles had atrophied over the months she was trying to heal. Gracie was compensating in her walks by putting more weight on her uninjured side. . . a trend that not only atrophied her muscles, but also threw off her alignment. Now with the new brace, we can see a marked difference in her walk as she uses her legs normally, bearing weight equally, even on the injured leg.
Strength and muscle mass are returning to Gracie's leg. We can tell by the way she walks when shes' at home, not wearing the brace. Also, putting the brace on her leg now feels like there's a different fit - a good fit - but I'm having to adjust for more muscle mass.
Gracie's walks are short, still, as she regains strength in muscles that haven't been used in a long time. We can see that she's excited to be out there in the world, going for walks, and greeting friends once again. Running will have to wait a while, but we know we'll get there. Gracie's knee is healing as we continue to use natural alternatives to support her in the process.

What Our Clients Are Saying

Had we not found Rosemary and Ginger's story, we would have had very little hope, and we are forever grateful for her being there. Our decision to do chemo goes against Rosemary's convictions, but that has not changed anything in her support and willingness to help answer any questions we might have! It is like having a close friend by your side. Susan, GA

I am happy to report that we finally have the " old Daisy " back again!
She is not scooting anymore, she is going for walks with me and is fully engaged in whatever we are doing.
She is off all medication.
I gave your name to our vets from Berryhill holistic veterinary. They were very interested in what you did for Daisy.
Gratefully, Marilyn, OR
